<html><head></head><body><div><div><div><div><br></div>John 8;2-11<div><br></div><div><b>2. &nbsp;Early in the morning he came again to the temple; all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.</b></div><div><b>3. &nbsp;The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst</b></div><div><b>4. &nbsp;they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.</b></div><div><b>5. &nbsp;Now the law of Moses commanded us to stone such. &nbsp;What do you say about her?”</b></div><div><b>6. &nbsp;This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him.</b></div><div><b>Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.</b></div><div><b>7. &nbsp;And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”</b></div><div><b>8. &nbsp;And once more he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.</b></div><div><b>9. &nbsp;But when they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.</b></div><div><b>10. &nbsp;Jesus looked up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? &nbsp;Has no one condemned you? &nbsp;</b></div><div><b>11. &nbsp;She said, “No one, Lord”. And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again.”</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div>God is love, his desire toward us&nbsp;is not to condemn but to forgive.</div><div><br></div><div>Yet,&nbsp;his law commands wrath, and the shedding of blood to atone for guilt of&nbsp;sinners. &nbsp;But, his law also&nbsp;provides escape for sinners&nbsp;from the wrath of God. &nbsp;A substitute may take the guilt and shed its’ blood in place of the sinner. &nbsp;In the law of Moses, guilty sinners would place their hands upon the head of innocent&nbsp;animals like a lamb or a bull, the animal was then killed, its’ throat was cut, its’ blood was shed, in place of the sinners.<span>&nbsp;</span><span></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>No animal blood can ever really pay for our sin,&nbsp;all the blood ever shed on Jewish altars only&nbsp;foreshadowed the final perfect holy blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God, his&nbsp;blood did pay fully for our guilt and sin. &nbsp;We hide ourselves in the wounds of Jesus.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The substitutionary sacrifice, Jesus,&nbsp;is God’s ‘lawful&nbsp;love’ for us, providing&nbsp;us with escape from the wrath to come against all unrepentant&nbsp;sin and&nbsp;unbelief.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The woman caught in adultery stood before Jesus, (just as the Jews stood before their blood guilt/sin offerings). &nbsp;Soon he would shed his blood for her and for all of us guilty sinners who deserve to die.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Judgement belongs only&nbsp;to God, <i>“…’Vengeance is mine, I will repay’ says the Lord.” </i>(Romans 12;19)</span></div><div><span>Only holiness can rightly&nbsp;mete&nbsp;out punishment. &nbsp;&nbsp;None of those who brought the woman were holy and they knew it. &nbsp;That is why they all&nbsp;went away. &nbsp;Jesus, the only holy One, could have condemned her, but he is God, he is love, his desire toward us is to be merciful. &nbsp;He would rather take her guilt and ours himself.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>God demands only one thing&nbsp;from us&nbsp;sinners, <i>“The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart O God, thou wilt not despise.” &nbsp;</i>(Psalm 51;17).
