<html><head></head><body><div><div><div><div><br></div>John 19;31-37<div><br></div><div><b>31. &nbsp;Since it was the Day of Preparation, </b>(the day before Passover when all leaven is removed from Jewish homes and final preparations made so that the Shabbat may be properly observed) <b>in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken, and that they might be taken away. </b>(Breaking the legs of one who is crucified quickly&nbsp;causes death by asphyxiation.)</div><div><b>32. &nbsp;So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;</b></div><div><b>33. &nbsp;but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.</b></div><div><b>34. &nbsp;But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.</b></div><div><b>35. &nbsp;He who saw it has borne witness—and his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth—that you also may believe.</b></div><div><b></b><b>36. &nbsp;For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, “Not a bone of him shall be broken.”</b></div><div><b></b><b>37. &nbsp;And again another scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they have pierced.”</b></div><div><br></div><div><b></b>Just as the wife of Adam, Eve,&nbsp; was taken from Adam’s side, so also the Bride of Christ the Church, is created by the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. &nbsp;This is the meaning of the <i>“blood and water” </i>which came from Jesus’ pierced side.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Why should the Jews care about crucified men hanging on crosses during their High Sabbath of Passover?</div><div><br></div><div>Some who say the sound of their cries of suffering would disturb the sabbath quiet and rest. &nbsp;Others would say the sabbath is not a time for “work” and the man Jesus on the cross is chiefly the ‘work’ of the chief priests and Elders. &nbsp;They too wanted their work to be finished before the sabbath began.</div><div><br></div><div>Scripture teaches, <i>“And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is to be put to death, and you shall hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you shall bury him that same day, for a hanged man is accused man&nbsp;by God; you shall not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance.” &nbsp;</i>(Deuteronomy&nbsp;21;22&amp;23)</div><div><br></div><div>Even in his death, Jesus fulfilled all the scriptures. &nbsp;The fulfillment of all the prophetic&nbsp;Messianic scriptures concerning the atoning sacrifice of the Savior have been fulfilled. &nbsp;We mortal pilgrims through time await the final fulfillment of his return in the clouds with the angels for Judgement.</div><div><br></div><div>Those same scriptures declare, <i>“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; </i><u>he does not come into judgement, but has passed from death to life.”</u>&nbsp;</div><div><span>(John 5;24)</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Prayer: &nbsp;Bless us Father, through the hearing of Christ’ word and through the faith you have given us to believe in your love for repentant&nbsp;sinners, to truly, fully die with Jesus and pass into newness of life eternal.
