<html><head></head><body><div><div><div><div><br></div>Mark 6;35-38<div><br></div><div><b>35. &nbsp;And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a lonely place, and the hour is now late;</b></div><div><b>36. &nbsp;send them away, to go into the country and villages round about and buy themselves something to eat.</b></div><div><b>37. &nbsp;But he answered them, &nbsp;“You give them something to eat.” &nbsp;And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?”</b></div><div><b>38. &nbsp;And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? &nbsp;Go and see.” &nbsp;And when they had found out, they said, “Five loaves and two fish.”</b></div><div><br></div><div>Finally, at a late hour, the disciples (who have been away from Jesus and the crowds&nbsp;all day, resting), <i>“came <u>to him”</u>&nbsp;</i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;suggested that Jesus <i>“send them </i>(the crowds) <i>away”</i>.</div><div><br></div><div>At last, the disciple/apostles&nbsp;had hope for some peaceful, relaxed,&nbsp;quality time with their teacher. &nbsp;(Which was what they had come to this lonely place for in the first place.). &nbsp;They were concerned for their own ‘self-care’. &nbsp;They were focused on their own needs, let the crowds&nbsp;be responsible&nbsp;to feed themselves…Let the crowds&nbsp;go away into the countryside and small villages and search there for their evening meal. &nbsp;Let them ‘fund’ themselves!</div><div><br></div><div>Instead, Jesus invites the disciple/apostles to join with Him in His own compassion for the ‘sheep’, saying, <i>“You give them something to eat.”</i></div><div><i><br></i></div><div>Immediately the disciples respond out of their logic and reason, out of their natural&nbsp;system of earthly economics saying, <i>“Shall ‘<u>we go’</u>&nbsp;and buy two hundred denarii &nbsp;</i>(A denarius was a days wages for a common laborer. &nbsp;If unskilled labor is paid $15 an hour, and works for eight hours, that $120 dollars. &nbsp;Two hundred&nbsp;denarii then worth of bread would add up to $24,000 dollars!)&nbsp;<i>worth&nbsp;</i><i>of bread, and give it to them to eat?”</i></div><div><i><br></i></div><div>The disciples think Jesus is laying the burden of feeding the crowds on&nbsp;themselves.
