What is it that these men testify against you?”</b></div><div><b>61. &nbsp;But he was silent and made no answer. Again, the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”</b></div><div><b>62. &nbsp;And Jesus said, “I am; and you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”</b></div><div><b>63. &nbsp;And the high priest tore his mantle, and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?</b></div><div><b>64. &nbsp;You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.</b></div><div><b>65. &nbsp;And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” and the guards received him with blows.</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div>The chief priest, elders, and scribes did not plot to kill Jesus because He was a blasphemer. &nbsp;That charge was only a pretext for killing Jesus. &nbsp;Later, before Pilate, they changed their charge against Jesus saying, He claims to be a ‘king.’ &nbsp; (Rome cared nothing for punishing blasphemers, but Rome would not tolerate earthly&nbsp;political opposition to its own authority.)</div><div><br></div><div>They wanted Jesus dead because they feared Him. &nbsp;They feared His popularity with the people. &nbsp;They feared their own loss of position, power, and income. &nbsp;They feared that the Romans would see them and the temple worship system as no longer useful, thus rendering the priestly&nbsp;cast and their Temple&nbsp;unnecessary in controlling the people.</div><div><br></div><div>If Jesus were allowed to go on and be acclaimed as the Messiah, the chief priests and all would have to bow before Him. &nbsp;They already had their gods, their own selves and Mammon. &nbsp;The Temple worship system&nbsp;for them was simply&nbsp;a tool for&nbsp;honoring themselves, not God. &nbsp;(see, John 11;45-53)</div><div><br></div><div>Jesus, the humble, obedient, Son of God the Father, came to serve us, setting us free from the rebellion of Satan which is in our flesh; self-worship. &nbsp;He came to transform us into humble, obedient children of God who live for the praise of God’s glory. &nbsp;(see, Ephesians 1;12).
