<html><head></head><body><div><div><div><div><br></div>Mark 15;35&amp;36<div><br></div><div><b>35. &nbsp;And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”</b></div><div><b>36. &nbsp;And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” &nbsp;</b>(The Gospel of Matthew says,</div><div><i>“…will come and ‘save’ him”</i>.)</div><div><br></div><div>Every year at Passover Jews traditionally leave one seat empty at the table. &nbsp;It is called ‘Elijah’s chair.’</div><div>The Jews were waiting for the long promised Messiah (Savior). &nbsp;The knew the promised ‘Coming One’ would not come until first God sent them the Old Testament prophet Elijah. &nbsp;(see, Malachi 4;5&amp;6, and Matthew 17;10-13)</div><div><br></div><div>What ever hopes the crowds may have had about Jesus were gone. &nbsp;He certainly was not the Messiah, the Promised Coming One who would ‘save’ all Israel. &nbsp;There he was dying on the cross, nope, it was not the Jesus from Nazareth they all thought.</div><div><br></div><div>The crowds hurled insults at Jesus saying, <i>“He saved others, he cannot save himself. &nbsp;Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” &nbsp;</i>(Mark 15;32)</div><div><br></div><div>Those gathered at the cross had given up all hope in Jesus, he was a miserable failure. &nbsp;But then when Jesus called out, <i>“Elo-i! Elo-i!” </i>at least one was still hoping that perhaps Jesus was calling for Elijah, himself hoping to be saved. &nbsp;Perhaps, finally Elijah would come, and perhaps then some other unknown one would follow Elijah and save Israel.</div><div><br></div><div>Jesus, did not need to be saved. &nbsp;Even as he suffered and died, he was himself acting as the long promised ‘coming One’, the Savior. &nbsp;He was saving all Israel.
