<html><head></head><body><div><div><div><br>Romans 5;12-14<div><br></div><div><b>12. &nbsp;Therefore, as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned—</b></div><div><b>13. &nbsp;Sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.</b></div><div><b>14. &nbsp;Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div>I am grateful&nbsp;for the Apostle Peter, because he acknowledges that some of Paul’s writings are, <i>“hard to understand.” &nbsp;</i>(2 Peter 3;15&amp;16)</div><div><br></div><div>Today’s reading from Romans, especially verse 13, is for me one of those writings. &nbsp;Verse 13 is a sort of parenthetical statement. &nbsp;It is almost an aside to the real point he is making.</div><div><br></div><div>Peter warns us, we must not allow our carnally darkened minds to create a false teaching out of this verse. &nbsp;It does NOT mean that ‘those who had not the law of Moses, were not counted by God as sinners‘. &nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>They certainly were. &nbsp;The fact that they were physically&nbsp;dying is clear evidence that they were indeed counted as sinners by God.</div><div><br></div><div>What Paul is saying, is that with the Mosaic law, mankind gained&nbsp;further, additional recognition of sin.</div><div>Before the giving of the Mosaic law, most of mankind did not acknowledge or <i>“count” </i>&nbsp;their sin as sin. &nbsp;But, be assured, God has always&nbsp;counted all sin as sin. Both our inherited sin-nature, as well as our sins of commission and omission.&nbsp;&nbsp;<span>Paul, underscores this in verse 14.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Finally, Paul is making a distinction between Adam’s sin and <i>“those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam.” &nbsp; </i>What is the distinction?&nbsp;</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>&nbsp;Adam willfully disobeyed the clear command of God. &nbsp;His wickedness was done with full knowledge of God’s will. &nbsp;Whereas, those without the law still sin&nbsp;(and as a result suffer death), but that their sin came as a result of their fallen nature, not necessarily as an overt act of intentional rebellion. &nbsp;Adam’s wickedness had a much more terrible result than the rest of mankind’s sin,&nbsp;as we will see.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The point of greater importance&nbsp;is Paul&nbsp;teaching us that;&nbsp;<i>“Adam, was a ‘type’ of the one who was to come.”</i></span></div><div><span>Here, Paul is&nbsp;referring to Christ Jesus. Meaning, there is something about Adam which illuminates for us the work of Christ.</span></div><div>This we will see&nbsp;in&nbsp;tomorrow’s reading.</div><div><br></div><div>Prayer: &nbsp;Merciful Father, we praise You that Your will is to give us life and give&nbsp;it abundantly. I am grateful for the Apostle Peter, because he acknowledges that some of Paul’s writings are, “hard to understand.”  (2 Peter 3;15&16)
