<html><head></head><body><div><div><div><div><br></div>Romans 7;1-3<div><br></div><div><b>1. &nbsp;Do you not know brethren—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only during his life?</b></div><div><b>2. &nbsp;Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies she is discharged from the law concerning the husband.</b></div><div><b>3. &nbsp;Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress &nbsp;if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. &nbsp;But if her husband dies she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div>When the law (or command)&nbsp;of God&nbsp;said, <i>“but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, you shall not eat….” &nbsp; &nbsp;</i>God gave Adam something very good, the way of life and holiness. &nbsp;This law did no harm to Adam and Eve so long as they obeyed it. &nbsp;This law gave them only&nbsp;the way of&nbsp;life.</div><div><br></div><div>But then God warned Adam, <i>“for in the day that you </i>(disobey)&nbsp;<i>eat of it, you shall surly die.”</i></div><div><i><br></i></div><div>So long as Adam and Eve kept (obeyed) God’s law, they had life. &nbsp;Death is not a part of God’s holy&nbsp;law.</div><div><i>“The law of the LORD&nbsp;is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD&nbsp;is sure, making wise the simple; &nbsp;the precepts of the LORD&nbsp;are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD&nbsp;is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD&nbsp;is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD&nbsp;are true, and righteous all together. &nbsp;More to be desired, are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also, then, honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.” &nbsp;</i>(Psalm 19;7-10)</div><div><br></div><div>The law of God is pure and holy, there is no death in the law of God itself. &nbsp;Keeping the law means only life.</div><div>This law of God may be called the, ‘law of life.’</div><div><br></div><div>However, disobedience (sin, trespass against the holy and good law of God) results in death. &nbsp;</div><div>Therefore, another ‘consequential law’ exists for law-breakers. &nbsp;Paul calls this the ‘law of sin (and death)’.</div><div>If we enter the way of sin, we leave the path of life, off the path of life there is only death.</div><div><br></div><div>AND,&nbsp;additionally,&nbsp;here Paul (in verse 3)&nbsp;introduces&nbsp;the truth that with death comes release from the law.&nbsp;The law of God is in effect upon the living, not the dead. &nbsp;He uses marriage as an example.</div><div><br></div><div>This principle, that ‘with physical&nbsp;death comes release from the law’ is at the heart of understanding our salvation. &nbsp;&nbsp;<span>Dead people no longer break the law. &nbsp;The police and the courts are full only of living transgressors, no physically&nbsp;</span><span>dead people are on trial.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>When Adam and Eve sinned, they died instantly&nbsp;spiritually, and death began to work in their now mortal bodies. &nbsp;That is what the word mortal means, ‘able to die’. &nbsp;Before sin, Adam and Eve had immortal bodies, death was not a part of them, but when they sinned they lost the eternal image of God, the image of holiness and life,&nbsp;then death began to work upon their flesh.</span><span>&nbsp;</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Therefore, it is good to remember, the law of God&nbsp;itself is good and life giving, but transgressing the law, sinning, results in both spiritual death, (loss of the image of God) and physical death. &nbsp;Death (sin)&nbsp;is at work in our mortal flesh. &nbsp;Once we die physically, we stop sinning. &nbsp;Graveyards have no trouble with sinners who are below ground, just the ones above.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div>Prayer: &nbsp;Merciful Father, we praise You for Your holy law. &nbsp;Bless us to understand, that in Christ, we are blessed with his death&nbsp;and are raised again to newness of life. &nbsp;In Christ we are made&nbsp;truly&nbsp;alive, keepers of Your holy law. &nbsp;By the faith You have given us, bless us to&nbsp;believe, we have life <span>as&nbsp;we (by Your grace alone)&nbsp;</span>abide in Christ. &nbsp;
