Yet, if it had not been for the law, I should not have known sin. I should not have known what it is to covet it if the law has not said, “You shall not covet.”</b></div><div><b>8. &nbsp;But sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, wrought&nbsp;in me, all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the laws, sin lies dead.</b></div><div><b>9. &nbsp;I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;</b></div><div><b>10. &nbsp;the very commandment which promised life proved to be death to me.</b></div><div><b>11. &nbsp;For sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and by it killed me.</b></div><div><b>12. &nbsp;So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.</b></div><div><br></div><div><i>“The very commandment which promised life proved to be death to me.”</i></div><div><i><br></i></div><div>Our problem is not the holy law of God. &nbsp;The law of God we know&nbsp;is holy and gives life to the One(s) who keep it. &nbsp;But for all the children of Adam, it is impossible for us to&nbsp;keep the holy, life-giving&nbsp;law of God.</div><div><br></div><div>Our problem is that from conception&nbsp;we are sold into sin. We have Inherited&nbsp;the rebellion of Satan. &nbsp;From the moment egg and sperm can together, our spiritual DNA has been infected with the sin of Adam. &nbsp;<i>“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” &nbsp;</i>(Psalm 51;5). Sinfulness is an inherited condition. &nbsp;We are born spiritually dead. &nbsp;(see, Ephesians 2;1)</div><div><br></div><div>When Paul says, <i>“I was once alive apart from the law.” &nbsp;</i>He is not saying he was spiritually alive, or holy, or righteous. &nbsp;He is saying, “I ‘thought’ I was alive.” &nbsp;That ‘I’ Paul is referring to is the <i>“old self”. &nbsp;</i>That ‘I’ needs to die with Jesus. &nbsp;(see, Galatians 2;20)&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>The law of God then remains good and holy. &nbsp;It is God’s righteous truth which exposes our spiritual&nbsp;deadness in sin. &nbsp;&nbsp;<span>God’s holy law, leads us to know our hopeless condition. &nbsp;</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The gift of the&nbsp;</span><span>holy law of God,</span><span> is the power of God the Holy Spirit to begin the work of repentance and contrition in us. &nbsp;It is the first, necessary work of ‘killing’ us, so that by God’s grace&nbsp;we despair of ourselves and in thankful joy cling to the Good News of Christ for us.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Jesus alone is the only One who has perfectly fulfill the holy law of God. &nbsp;Only as we are <b><u>“in Christ”</u>&nbsp; </b>do we have the righteousness of God. &nbsp;By our baptism <u>“into Christ”</u>&nbsp;we are made one with Him. &nbsp;His righteousness becomes our own with Him.<i>&nbsp;&nbsp;</i><b></b></span></div><div><span><i><br></i></span></div><div><span>We now with Paul can say, <i>“For me to live is Jesus, and to die is gain.” &nbsp;</i>(Philippians 1;21) &nbsp; Paul is not simply &nbsp;referring to physical death, he is also referring to the death God blesses us with in our baptism into Christ.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Prayer: &nbsp;Merciful Father, we praise you that by our baptism into Christ, we are blessed to die with Him to sin which ruled us. &nbsp;In Christ we have been raise into oneness of life. &nbsp;&nbsp;In and with Jesus, we are now keepers of Your most holy law. &nbsp;Deliver us from temptations to sin dear Father. &nbsp;Bless us to ever by faith, abide in Christ through the working of Your Word and Spirit. &nbsp;In Jesus we pray.
